Cleaning Tips
Coconut Creek earned the name "Butterfly Capital of the World" through real environmental commitment. Here's how to keep your home spotless with cleaning that's safe for your family, your pets, and the pollinators right outside your door.

Coconut Creek isn't called the "Butterfly Capital of the World" just because Butterfly World is here. The city has earned it: more than two decades as a certified Tree City USA, the first city in Florida certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, the first in the state to win Audubon International's Green Community Award, and an award-winning tree canopy program that shades neighborhoods across the city.
When you live somewhere that takes its butterfly gardens and wildlife corridors seriously, it's worth asking what you're spraying inside your own home. Here's how to keep a Coconut Creek house genuinely clean — without working against everything that makes this city special.
Why green cleaning makes sense here
What you rinse down the drain doesn't disappear. Harsh chemicals make their way into the water system and the wetlands and wildlife corridors the city works to protect.
Indoor air quality is real. Many conventional cleaners release VOCs that linger in your home — and kids and pets spend the most time close to the floor, where residue settles.
It'd be a little strange to plant a butterfly garden out front and fog the living room with something you can't pronounce.
All that tree canopy comes with dust and pollen
Coconut Creek's shade is a gift in August. It also means leaf litter, organic debris, and heavy seasonal pollen — and a lot of it comes inside on shoes and through open doors.
Pay extra attention to entryways and door thresholds, window and slider tracks, screens and screened patios, and your AC filters, which work overtime here. A sturdy mat at every door and a shoes-off habit cuts tracked-in debris more than any product will.
What "green cleaning" actually means
Green doesn't have to mean less effective — technique matters as much as product:
Microfiber does the heavy lifting. A good microfiber cloth cleans with far less product, and reusable cloths beat paper towels on cost and waste.
Look for plant-based, low-VOC, and fragrance-free options. Third-party certifications (like Green Seal or EPA Safer Choice) are more meaningful than the word "natural" on a label.
Simple staples work. Baking soda is a gentle abrasive; castile soap handles most general cleaning; 3% hydrogen peroxide is a solid disinfectant that breaks down into water and oxygen.
Give disinfectants time. Most need to sit wet on a surface for several minutes to actually work. Spraying and immediately wiping does almost nothing.
Two safety notes: never mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar — the combination produces toxic gas. And skip vinegar entirely on natural stone like marble or travertine; the acid etches it permanently.
A year-round routine
Weekly: kitchen and bathrooms, floors, high-touch surfaces (handles, switches, remotes).
Monthly: baseboards, ceiling fans, AC vents and returns, window and slider tracks, and under furniture.
Seasonally: grout and caulk, upholstery and rugs, screens and patios, and a deep clean before and after hurricane season.
Don't forget hurricane season (June–November)
Hurricane season overlaps with our wettest, most humid months. A clean, decluttered home is a more storm-ready one. Before a storm, clear patios, secure loose items, and tidy the garage. Afterward, wipe surfaces down and run the AC or a dehumidifier to keep humidity — and mildew — from taking hold.
When it makes sense to call in a pro
Plenty of Coconut Creek residents handle the day-to-day and bring in a professional team for the heavy lifting. It's worth it when:
You want a thorough, detail-oriented clean — done right the first time.
You'd rather have your weekends back.
You want recurring cleaning so pollen, dust, and humidity never get ahead of you.
You need a one-time deep clean or a move-in / move-out clean.
That's exactly what we do at Sun Cleaning. We're local, we're thorough, and we tailor every visit — recurring, deep, or one-time — to your home and your schedule.
