Clean Your Building to Keep it Smelling Fresh

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010 by jbgloss

How do you instantly know if a building is clean? The first thing you look at it how it looks. You check for shiny windows, sparkling floors and furniture. This instantly creates and impression on you when you enter a building. But is this all that there is in determining if your building is clean? Of course not! A clean building does not only look clean but also smells clean. This is why it is very important that you do not only clean to make it look clean, but also remove all the dirt that may cause your building to smell bad.

The first thing that you should remember is that it is not enough to spray deodorizers and air fresheners to mask the odor. Remember that this fades away and will allow the smell to come back. Sometimes, it mixes with the smell and will even result to a worse smell. So what you really need is a method that will surely clean your building thoroughly to eliminate the possibility of bad odor from forming in your building.

In order to ensure that your building is cleaned properly, you need to know how to use your cleaning materials. It is not enough that you have top of the line equipment if you do not use them properly. You may have the best vacuum cleaner there is but still find your building to be dirty as ever. Not being able to clean your building well will only cause the build up of odor causing bacteria that will leave it smelling like molds.

Usually the cause of your problems come from the most obvious sources. Make sure that your cleaning solutions do have the same scent. If the scents that you have clash, they may mix up and result to a foul smell that will only leave your building smelling dirty.

Make sure that you have a cleaning system for your building. A deep cleaning program is recommended as an overall cleaning for your building. This should be done regularly since bacteria can grow easily and eliminating them as fast as you can, will prevent it from escalating.

Check if the building has enough ventilation. Allowing the air to circulate will only cause your building to trap in odors that may be unpleasant. This may trap all the smell of sweat, dirt, perfumes and all the other scents that do not really smell good together.

As for the cleaning materials that you are using, replace all of your cleaning rags and cloth with microfiber. Wiping with wet cloth or rags will only cause your building to smell as bad as not cleaning it. If you do not wash your cloths after each cleaning, then you only spread these bacteria that may breed in places where they are left. Especially if your cleaning rags are wet, they leave the surface wet, which is conducive to the growth of mold and bacteria.

The potential cause of the foul odor usually comes from the restrooms. This may be cause by not flushing the toilets or not cleaning it regularly. You should always make sure that cleaning this is done regularly and with the use of disinfectants. This will prevent the growth of the bacteria that will result in bad odor.

Leave you Building Smelling Clean With Microfiber

When you clean with microfiber, then you are saving your building from the bad odor that may result from faulty cleaning. First and foremost, microfiber cloths are no way the same as your regular cleaning cloths. This is made from nylon and polyamide which has a lot more advantages than cleaning with cotton cloths.

This material is so absorbent that it can absorb water up to six times it weight. What is amazing about this is that it can clean oil! Imagine a cleaning cloth that actually absorbs oil and not just spread it along the surface. When you clean with microfiber, you have two options of cleaning, either when it is dry or when it is wet. You are not required to clean with a cleaning solution, because it can effectively clean without it. All you need is lukewarm water and you can wipe away any surface. This will help you save the environment and protect it from the toxic chemicals that can harm not only the environment but also you.

Compared to a cleaning cloth, microfiber is more effective in picking up dirt and germs on any surface. Each strand of the microfiber has a flat edge that will allow more surface area in contact with it. It actually picks up the bacteria and dirt there and trap it in its fibers. Your cleaning cloth does otherwise. The rounded tips of the strands do not actually pick up the dirt but just push them around the surface and cause the dirt to pile up in one area. The reason behind the effective cleaning of microfiber is because of the positive static charge that it carries. This easily attracts the negatively charged particles on the surface. These are trapped within the pores in each fiber which prevents the dirt to return back to the surface as you wipe again.

Cleaning cloths are not the only cleaning materials that have been made with microfiber. If you want to replace all of your cleaning materials with microfiber, you may do so. This will create a whole system that will not only leave your building looking clean, but also smelling clean. There are microfiber mop pads, window cleaning cloths, scrubbing cloths and even furniture cleaning cloths.

Keeping your commercial building pleasant will attract people to go there. Remember that you commercial should not only look clean. It should also satisfy the sense of smell of the people. This can be done by cleaning your building thoroughly. It is not so much of a hard thing to do if you want your building to be clean. Adopt a system that will ensure this and you will see how it can change the way that you will feel about your building.

Domestic Cleaning Or Commercial Cleaning, What Is the Difference?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 by jbgloss

Found this great article on Commercial Cleaning vs Domestic Cleaning -

s there really a difference between domestic and commercial cleaning? In short the answer is yes; but there are various factors that make it so.

With commercial cleaning the work is considered a necessity for running the business so becomes a business expense. Business expenses are part of a budget therefore the cost of having the premises cleaned needs to fit into the allocated amount. This is not the case with domestic cleaning as it is purely a decision of the homeowner to clean their property themselves or pay to have it done.

There are certain expectations of cleaning by property owners, but the kind carried out with commercial property does depend on the business. Any business handling food is meticulous about keeping the place hygienically clean. Health requirements are such that if they do not keep the properties as clean as the set Health Standards they could lose their licence to sell food. This is a great incentive for people to work hard at keeping up the standards. Usually the cleaning is done by the employed staff. It is part of the closing down ritual so they know when they arrive the following day there will be no contamination.

Should a building contain offices for professional consultants or financial institutions the requirements are not so strict. A thorough vacuum and the hygienic cleaning of all the bathrooms are usually sufficient. Because offices house many desks with computers most cleaners are not required to dust. They are expected to empty the rubbish bins, but vacuuming the floor is the main prerequisite.

Many commercial buildings, especially large city skyscrapers leased by various organisations, tender out their cleaning. This helps them cope with the annual cost and it is budgeted into their expenses. Sometimes the cheapest tender is chosen but this does not guarantee a thorough job.

For a commercial cleaning company to make a profit they must ensure that the number of worked hours they pay for are less than the money they receive for the work. Should they have underquoted to get the job, less time is spent cleaning on each floor making the quality of the clean not as diligent as it probably should be.

There are thousands of commercial buildings and many areas that need to be cleaned and kept in pristine condition. Floors and bathrooms inside the buildings are a must for daily cleaning but the windows of the buildings also need a regular removal of dust both inside and out, especially if it is a shop front used for promotion of sales. Wooden or vinyl floors must be regularly polished to keep up the shine. All these jobs need to be carried out by professionals in those fields.

Because commercial cleaning is usually done by Cleaning Organisations the owners of the building will not meet the cleaners. If the job is not done well the lessees of the space will complain to the owner. This is unless the lessee has arranged the cleaning themselves. As cleaning in commercial property is usually done outside of business hours the cleaner is very rarely seen and in some cases it is not the same person doing the job each day.

To ensure the cleaning is kept up to standard, owners of commercial properties take out Contracts with Cleaning Companies. This is where the tendering becomes an advantage. The Contract is signed for a certain period of time, and at the end of that Contract the owners of the buildings can renegotiate their cleaning costs and requirements. If they are not happy with the kind of cleaning they are receiving they look elsewhere.

Commercial cleaning can be a lucrative business, but matching the quality with the charge is the difficult part and many commercial cleaners charge less than they should just to obtain the jobs. Once they have the Contract they sometimes ‘on sell’ these Contracts and make money from the new arrangement. Depending on how much the contract is worth, determines the amount of time that can be spent cleaning. Each cleaner is allocated a specific number of minutes to clean an area or floor and the work has to be finished in that time. Speed does not always combine with efficiency and quality is not always received.

The reduction of spending for cleaning, and the small profits to be made can cause many commercial cleaning jobs to be rushed and poorly administered.

Cleaning a home is different. To the homeowner their property is their castle. They will be much more fastidious about the results. They are paying for the cleaning out of their own pocket and they want to see some value in return for that expenditure. The work is more demanding than cleaning a commercial property.

The requirements of most homeowners are such that a reasonable cleaning job is not good enough. Expectations are high and on top of that they have all their personal things throughout the dwelling and allowing someone into their home to clean has security implications. The home owner needs to feel comfortable with the person doing the work and be sure the place will look as neat, clean and tidy as they expect after each clean.

Where do home owners go to find a cleaner? They don’t put out tenders as in the commercial world so who do they get to clean? Many people advertise for cleaners in their local papers, or they hire people who promote themselves as cleaners, also there are Cleaning Agencies who will charge a fee for finding the cleaner for them.

Homes are very rarely cleaned on a daily basis. If the home owner has a regular cleaner the dwelling is usually cleaned either weekly or fortnightly. Some home owners require their cleaner to do housework as well, so the time spent on the property can be quite long.

Just vacuuming the floors and cleaning the bathrooms is usually not enough when cleaning a home; especially as bathrooms are more than the toilets, urinals and basins. There is the shower and bath as well as the toilet and sink. Kitchens are larger with many cupboards and a stove top and probably a range hood, whereas in a commercial situation the kitchen is usually a small set of cupboards with a sink and microwave. Because the home is not cleaned daily there is also a build up of dust and dirt, and all horizontal surfaces need to be wiped.

In both cases Time is what the commercial property owner and the homeowner are paying for. With the Commercial situation a certain amount of money is allocated indicating the time allowed for the clean. In the Domestic world this situation is reversed. The homeowner pays for the Time it takes to clean their property. The size of the property and the area to be cleaned governs the Time it takes. The larger the building the more Time required. The smaller the property the Time will be less. Less Time spent, costs less, but if the property is large and the correct Time is not allocated the poorer the job.

For most commercial property owners as long as the basics are done they are happy, but with a home owner, the less work carried out means more cleaning for them to do themselves. This somewhat negates the whole idea of having a cleaner. They want their home to be pristine and clean when they return home after a long days work. To see areas that have been missed or not cleaned properly can make an expensive exercise.

So the biggest difference between commercial and domestic cleaning is the payment. The commercial world pays for their cleaning because it is a necessity. Whether the cleaning is done well or not is not really the issue, it is a cost that has to be paid and therefore an expense for the business. With the domestic situation the cost is a discretionary outlay. If people have the spare money they can afford it, if not they clean themselves and that is why they expect perfection.

Yes there is a difference between cleaning commercial property and domestic dwellings, but the kind of cleaning received is dependent on how much each is willing to pay.

10 Effective Household Cleaning Hints

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 by jbgloss

Household cleaning can often be very irritating and it can often seem like we spend all day trying to keep our house together, to only come back the next day to find our home dirty again. It’s as if we live in some twilight zone where cleaning is our eternal duty. If you experience a similar dilemma I’d like to offer to you some household cleaning hints that will hopefully save you some of the anguish of repetitive cleaning. Hopefully these hints will help you keep the dirt dogs at bay and give you a little more peace of mind before you have to do battle with them again.

Keep a Cleaning Schedule
1. When we have a cleaning schedule organizing our cleaning tasks on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis cleaning becomes a cinch! No longer will we have to stress about what needs to be cleaned, or when it needs to be cleaned, because we will know! As long as we maintain consistency with a schedule our cleaning tasks and life becomes much easier.

Organize a cleaning checklist
2. For better organizational purposes, organize a cleaning checklist with all cleaning tasks you intend to take care of that day. Check off the appropriate cleaning task once it has been finished. Having a checklist is like having a set list of goals that will keep your cleaning consistent and show you exactly what is getting accomplished.

Reduce Distractions
3. When it’s time to clean, in order to get the job done faster we need to be focused. Cell-phones and televisions can often pry our attention away from cleaning and this just increases the time we will have to spend. Anything that causes an outside distraction needs to be reduced so you can focus properly.

Scan you home
4. Before you begin your cleaning duties take note of all areas of your household that need the most cleaning. Cleaning from the areas of your house that need the most attention, and working your way down to the ones that need the least ensures long-lasting cleaning efficiency.

Organize your Cleaning Supplies
5. Have you cleaning supplies organized and ready to go in a carry-all bin. Not only does this save you time and energy of having to search around the house for the proper cleaning supplies, it also cuts your time in half by just having them and being ready to go.

Ask the Family for Help
6. When there are more hands around the house, cleaning time is drastically cut in half. Ask other members of the house to give you a hand when cleaning. To increase effectiveness and efficiency give each family member their own section of the house work from.

Listen to Music
7. To make the time go by even faster listen to music! Get a CD player, or MP3 Player and let the music guide your cleaning actions. Music can aid with just about everything and once we get into the zone you’ll be surprised just how fast you will finish cleaning.

De-Clutter
8. Make sure to always remove any clutter that might be lying around the house. Cleaning can’t begin until excess clutter has been removed. In order to cut down on the time of having to do this, I recommended putting into practice, putting items back where they belong once you’re done using them.

Alternative Cleaning Methods
9. Because many commercial cleaning agents can be hazardous to one’s health, many people often prefer to use alternative cleaning solutions. While alternative solutions may take a bit more time to use, they are often inexpensive, can be bought in bulk, and are health and environmentally friendly. Items like white distilled vinegar, baking soda, and club soda are all examples of alternative cleaners.

Floor Cleaning
10. Most of the dirt that our homes accumulate can often be found within our flooring. Maintaining consistent vacuuming and floor cleaning can prevent much of the buildup. Some people prefer placing rules such as having no shoes on the carpet or flooring to prevent dirt buildup. Most of the time it is with our shoes that dirt gets tracked into our homes, so this is actually a very good idea to use.

Hopefully this list of 10 household cleaning hints will have given you some insight into ways to make cleaning easier for you. The aim is to utilize effective and efficient methods to cut down on time spent when cleaning our house. Once we can achieve efficiency cleaning house becomes a breeze that we can knock out in no time flat.
